I caught something

And I’m confused

Chlamydia?

Worse

FEELINGS.

20

Tucker

I want to watch.

I tap my foot against the hardwood, counting the number of times it smacks the shiny grain. Six.

“Hey son, how are you?” Dad asks cheerfully, despite the fact it’s nearing eleven at night and he’s likely been sleeping in his recliner for over an hour already. He never misses a call.

“This is your reminder to get up and sleep in bed,” I tease, since Dad’s been known to catch a few nights in the living room after falling asleep watching murder mysteries.

His chortle makes me happy, but also makes me homesick in equal measure. “I’m headed in there. I got caught up on a case.” In the background, the hum of true crime disappears, followed by the metallic snap of the recliner hinges closing. “Well, to what do I owe the pleasure of a night time call from my son? Everything okay?”

“I’m okay yeah but…well, I slept with Vienna.”

He drags his hand down his beard, the scrape of stubble clear as day in the receiver. “Gonna need more than that Tuck…” he prods.

“Well… the monthly Crave & Cure mixer was at my place. I offered because you know how close I am to the studio and I have the space. And last time everyone had a really great time playing the double Switches. We had that MarioKart championship.”

“I remember you said it was a great time,” Dad recalls. “And that’s what having a large space is all about. Sharing it for good times.”

“Definitely. So I had it here and since she’s a part of C&C for the next year, she was obligated to join. You know how Aug is about off-set stuff.”

Dad laughs. “Oh I know very well what Augustus is like. But I like that part of him. He wants to keep the team strong, and believe you me, the people working around you being happy is just as important as the job itself.”

“I know. Aug’s great when he’s not being kinda scary,” I tell dad, who knows all the sides of Aug because not only has my family met him plenty of times, but I tell dad everything.

“Okay, so Vienna came to the party. Did you show her?” Dad asks. When I found Vienna on the sidewalk trying to leave, I’d asked her to come back up and had every intention of showing her the artwork hidden away in my closet. The piece just for me. It was going to be for her, too.

“I didn’t. I got… carried away. It was so different from anyone else I’ve been with, and I don’t just mean different from my work. I mean, I’ve never felt more than… I don’t know. More than physical need. It was so much more , you know?”

Dad’s quiet sigh and careful words bring me peace. “I do. That’s the big deal.”

“What’s the big deal?”

“That connection.” He adjusts in his chair, the infamous squeaky spring giving him away. “That’s the thing. The thing everyone is looking for.”

“I was just going to say,” I add, my eardrums ringing a little.
